Epworth Screening Tool

The Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) is a scale intended to measure daytime sleepiness that is measured by the use of a very short questionnaire. This can be helpful in diagnosing sleep disorders. It was introduced in 1991 by Dr Murray Johns of Epworth Hospital in Melbourne, Australia

Epworth Sleepiness Scale

How likely are you to doze off or fall asleep in the following situations, in comparison to just feeling tired?
This refers to your usual way of life in recent times.
Even if you have not done some of these things recently, try to work out how they would have affected you.

1. Sitting and reading?

2. Watching TV?

3. Sitting still in a public place? (e.g. a theatre, a cinema, or a meeting)

4. As a passenger in a car for an hour without a break?

5. Lying down to rest in the afternoon when circumstances allow?
